Old Photos From Lily, Kentucky

The history of the Peters family is very much a part of the history of Lily, Kentucky. The Lily Post Office has a collection of historic photographs on display, and thanks to Randy McIntosh I'm able to post them on this web site. Randy traveled to Lily and scanned all of the historic photographs on display at the Post Office and emailed them to me.

The titles are (from top left): A Bird's Eye View of Lily; Edna Peters and Customer on Porch of Post Office; Arthur Barker on Horseback; Charles Barker; Edna Peters and Arthur Barker; Bill Reed Carries Mail

More Historic Lily Photographs

From left: Roy Peters (when he was Postmaster); Men on Railroad Track; Peters' Store and House; Roy and Edna Peters; George Spurlock Hanging Mail Pouch; Lily Post Offices; Logan Cassidy, Bill McHargue, Arthur Barker.

Thanks again to Randy McIntosh for all the trouble he went to to scan these photographs so we can all see them on the web.

Reminder: Aunt Ruby's Quilt of Family Military Veterans

This is a reminder...as of August 9 Mary Ellen has received only three photos. The quilt that she and Aunt Ruby will make from them will be a priceless tribute to our family members who have served in the military. Do your part by sending in photographs of family members in uniform - past and present. Here is the email I received today from Mary Ellen:
Please remind the family that we need pictures of family menbers that have served and are serving in the service. Photo will be returned as soon as quilt is completed at this time I only have 3. need names and any information that they would like under their photo. Thanks for your help. Mary Ellen - Ruby's daughter (If you don't know where to send your photos, you can email Mary Ellen for instructions at Marysturbaum@wmconnect.com )
Original request for photos:
The following was received from Mary Ellen Sturbaum, daughter of Ruby Proffit.

"It has been a dream of mother to do a quilt with all the photo's of family members who have served in the military. She would like to have a photo of each of them in uniform if possible. We will return the photo unharmed. If it's something they do not want to send in the mail I will pay for them to have a copy made or bring them to the family reunion this year. Her plan is to make the quilt and auction it off at the family reunion next year. I know that sounds like a long time away, but it will take time to gather all the photo's and make the quilt."

Appreciation of Family Members in Military

Mary Parsons has suggested that we put together and circulate a list of names of family members who are currently in the military for the purpose of sending them encouraging notes, etc.

If you know of any family members currently serving, please click on the "__comments" line at the bottom of this posting and let me know as much of the following as possible: Name of the family member in military service, branch of service, mail address (APO, etc), email address, birthday, photo if available (you can email photos to me at mdunwurkin@yahoo.com) - and anything additional you think may be helpful.

I'll wait about a week for your responses after which time I'll put a list of their names and addresses on this web site - and possibly some of their photo's. Then all of us will be able to write them or send them a "goodie" package - a card every now and then - anything to show them that we support and encourage them.

(Thanks to Mary for the suggestion!)

Sad News From Charles Peters Regarding Esther Holler

Today (6/23/06) I received a card from Jackie Lanter (Daughter of Don and Esther Holler). Jackie informed me that Esther passed away on December 6, 2005. Esther was the daughter of Stella Peters Murphy. Don will be moving to Indiana in July to be near Jackie. Esther volunteered for many years at the reunion to maintain the registration table. Esther will be missed.

Would You Like to Share Your Old Family Photos?

Would you like to share your old family photos? Randy McIntosh has volunteered to scan your old photos so they can be shared electronically. He asks that you bring them to the reunion, he'll take them home and scan them, then return the originals plus an electronic copy to you.

In an email to me, Randy McIntosh wrote: I was wondering if people might bring some of their old family pictures (reunions and just old photos in general) to the reunion and I could scan them (at home) and send them back. That way we could get pictures on disk to people who had computers.

Randy has done a great job capturing family memories with his camera and he has scanned hundreds of old family photos.

Did you know that - if you have old negatives but don't have the photo, the negatives can be scanned and converted to a viewable photo electronically? This photo of Edna Peters (my grandmother, and wife of Roy Peters), Connie Theresa Miller (my aunt), Elizabeth Peters (my aunt) and Fay Peters (my mother) was scanned from a negative by Cindy (Miller) Richmond (daughter of Lee Roy Miller and granddaughter of Connie T. Miller).

How Many Can You Name?

The following request/question came in from Elizabeth (Peters) Pennington, daughter of Roy and Edna Peters and granddaughter of W.C. Peters.

"I would like to know about the picture of our grandfather. You can see part of a lady in the photo. Do you have the whole picture? Who is it and what was the occasion?"

How many of the people in the photo can you identify? (Click on the photo to enlange it to full screen then click on "Back" to come back to this page.) Do you know what the occasion was? Click on the "Comments" button below and let us know. Your comments are valued. Thanks to Randy McIntosh for providing the photo. I think he scanned it from the original, and I think Aunt Ruby has the original. If you have old family photo's you would like to share, please email them to me at mdunwurkin@yahoo.com

SURPRISE Birthday Party for Aunt Ruby Proffit

The following was received from Mary Ellen Sturbaum, daughter of Ruby Proffit.

We're having a SURPRISE 90th Birthday Party for mother (Aunt Ruby) on Friday, June 23, 2006. The party will be held at The Italian American Hall, Forest Lake Drive, Fairfield, Ohio from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. All are welcome young and old.

No gifts PLEASE. Cards with special notes would be wonderful. Her kids and grandchildren would enjoy special memories from her family they could share about her childhood. Or stories about early years of marriage with our father. Please RSVP Mary Ellen at Marysturbaum@wmconnect.com "

Remember, this is a SURPRISE birthday party, so don't say anything to Aunt Ruby about it. Aunt Ruby is the lady at the well (on the right) in this photo. Do you know the name of the other lady in the photo?

Can You Identify These People?

Can you identify the people in this photo? Hint: Three of their maiden names were Peters. Two of the ladies were not members of the Peters family but were good friends of the family. The photo is at least 61 years old.

Thanks to Cindy (Miller) Richmond for sending in this photo. Cindy is the granddaughter of Connie Theresa Miller (daughter of Roy Peters and granddaughter of W.C. Peters).

Do you have old family photos that you would like to share on this web site? If you do, please email them to me at mdunwurkin@yahoo.com.

Interesting Family History From Willa Benge

The following article was received from Willa Benge. Aunt Grace (Willa's mother) is in the photo on the left; however, I'm not sure which one she is. The only person I can identify for sure is my grandfather, Roy P. Peters (wearing the tie). If you can identify any of the other people in this photo, please let me know by clicking on the "comments" button below. Thanks, Mark

I'm Willa Benge, not really a Peters, but my brothers are, so that makes me a Peters, right?

My Mother, Grace Davis, married Billy Peters when she was 18. It seemed like an unlikely union since he was older and had already lost two wives, and he had children who was older than she! Back then, marriage could be a matter of convenience. Billy was established in the community, and Mother was from a family of 12 kids, and looking for a way out. But somehow their union clicked! I've always thought Mother really loved Billy Peters. He taught her so much more than she learned in school. She loved learning, and he loved teaching.

Together, they had three sons, William Brock, Ernest Christopher, and Armon Edsel--my brothers.

WW2 was raging in 1941(?) when Billy died. Billy was Tax Commissioner (an elected position who's job is to assess the value of property for taxes). Mother was appointed to fill his unexpired term, and went on to be elected.

In comes my father, George Roberts, a suave, debonair Clay Countian, who courted Mother unrelentlessly. He won her heart purely on ingenuity and tenacity.

Mother finally succumed to to his wooing, and they married on 9-29-43. I was born 9 months and 10 minutes later on July 17, 1944.
